If you continue in advanced math, you will eventually have to spend the money on an expensive calculator. The one most popular in our system right now is the Texas Instruments TI84+ silver edition.* Don't buy a lower, but similar model. New stuff comes out all the time but you will be fine for a couple more years with this one if you can afford it. It runs from about $109 to $139. Right now the high school requires it for the higher level classes.
There is a new calculator on the market called TI-Nspire.* It is expensive but a big step forward in technology. Schools won't be able to afford to completely switch over any time soon. You will find that some schools have sets for a teacher to use in class.
You really should buy a scientific calculator. it should be algebraic and have a two line display. They only cost about $10 -$12. I like the ones by Casio* but there are many out there that will work.
If you are in the algebra 1 level you will be taking a state exam. It should be on the computer and you should be using an online calculator. The emulation will be for model TI-30x.
