How long have I been teaching?
Since October, 1984. First, I taught math for four years at Deltona Junior High: 84-85, 85-86, 86-87, 87-88. While at DJHS I was the sponsor of student government and went to the groundbreaking for the new high school.
Then, I moved to Deltona High School. We opened DHS in 1988 and I taught there for six years: 88-89, 89-90, 90-91, 91-92, 92-93, 93-94; teaching math and business education. By a strange set of events I eventually became chair of the math department.
When Pine Ridge High School in Deltona opened I was one of the first 16, called the cadre, and on the charter faculty. I was the first Teacher of the Year there. I taught there for three years: 94-95, 95-96, 96-97; teaching math and computer application classes. Teaching math in a computer lab really allowed for some powerful experiences.
Then, I was then a teacher-on-assignment for one year, working half-time at Southwestern and half-time at Taylor Middle School. After that I came to Southwestern when the gifted program entered its third year - it was phased in over a three year period and I was hired specifically for gifted math students. That first year was a very special year.
Three students came up from Woodward Elementary and the students already in 6th grade were a really strong group. 12 wanted to accelerate, that means do more math, and they were good at it. Out of that group was born the advanced math class sequence we now have. Those three 5th graders moved up to SMS the next year and later participated in MATHCOUNTS and played a role in our only winning team. On a personal note, my son was on that team and is now engaged to another team member. A few years later my daughter also participated in MATHCOUNTS.
Our 2009 team also won the district MATHCOUNTS competition. Great jobs guys and girls. Christopher is now my second district champion. Good math students make me look good!☺
