Math 1 is the course title for 6th grade math in Volusia County.  Students taking the class as gifted students have the same requirements as those not classified as gifted.

What happens in 6th grade?  Well, believe it or not, there aren't a lot of new ideas being created in the area of arithmetic.  But, there are a lot of ideas that you don't know.  For instance, very few of my students recognize prime factorization.  They often know what prime numbers are but now see it used in a new skill.  There are a lot of new mathematical ideas being created out in the academic world beyond us.  Most of it you wouldn't recognize, but maybe one day!?

In Volusia county we structure courses by Essential Questions.  Here are Essential Questions for the first grading period (and into the second) for the math 1 course:

• Can students use equations to solve real problems?

• Can students translate an expression and evaluate it when given a real world situation?
• Can the student multiply and divide fractions efficiently?
• Can students multiply and divide decimals efficiently?
• Can students demonstrate how fractions, decimals and percent are equivalent?
