In algebra we frequently refer to “terms.”
Terms are things like: 3, 3y, and 3x2,
These are monomials (mono- meaning single.)
POLYNOMIALS are monomials or sums of monomials (poly- meaning many)
x2 + 3y is a polynomial made up of two monomials. It is an example of a binomial.
Note that these are “unlike” terms and so can not be added together.
